A PAINTER TRUSTS HIS/HER SQUINTED EYES
When you look at the subject with your squinted eyes you are reducing the range of tones that you see down to a manageable number. With your eyes wide open you are confused by hundreds of subtle tonal differences and by all the subtle colour variation.
Squint at it and you will see, (with practise), THE MAIN TONAL VARIATIONS.
Look for the darkest dark and the lightest light areas. Look for the middle ground (the MID-TONE. You have to generalize tones, that is, bunch together similar areas of tone into one of the main groups.
